Wait Opposes Democrat Tax Hike
Springfield, IL… Illinois House Democrats today called a vote on legislation that would increase the state income tax by $3 billion without providing any property tax relief for Illinois homeowners.
State Representative Ron Wait (R-Belvidere) strongly opposed the Democrats’ tax hike and helped defeat the measure. Wait argued that this tax hike would not help Illinoisans paying ever-increasing property taxes and would drive jobs out of the state.
The proposed legislation adds another $3 billion to the already $45 billion in tax increases proposed by Democrats in the last two years.
“The Democrats who control state government have a track record of reckless spending that is driving our state into financial ruin – why reward them with another $3 billion? Especially since there are no guarantees that any of that money will come back to help our schools and improve our roads,” said Wait.
Under this legislation:
- Families will receive NO property tax relief and NO relief from high gas prices
- Nothing will be done to address the state’s $1.7 billion backlog of unpaid bills or pay down other debt
- Small businesses will be hurt. It taxes small businesses at a higher rate than many corporations
- Older senior couples looking to sell their larger homes and downsize will take a huge financial hit on their capital gain income
- Without property tax relief, this bill will make Illinois an island of high taxes surrounded by states considering tax cuts in 2008, including Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, and Wisconsin.
The Democrat Tax Hike failed 60 to 52. Even 13 Democrats voted against this Democrat sponsored bill.
