Wait Announces Support for Area Code Split
February 23, 2007
Belvidere , IL … State Representative Ron Wait (R-Belvidere) has announced his support for a split area code instead of the current dual area code overlay. The region previously covered by only the 815 area code has now been assigned an additional 779 area code.
“The addition of another area code by the Illinois Commerce Commission has brought many complaints to my office,” said Wait. “Having two area codes for the same region is confusing to some residents, could cause problems for businesses seeking to expand within the region, and raises some public safety concerns. It’s important that the public know about the impact of this move and it’s crucial that their opinions be heard.”
Under the new area code overlay, neighbors could have different area codes, businesses may encounter problems and confusion when relocating or expanding, and children and seniors may have difficulty remembering their phone numbers.
“The overlay is an issue I’m aware of and have been working on,” said Wait. “We need to take another look at the impact on residents and make sure that the ICC fully considered all options. Other legislators and I are scheduled to meet with representatives from the ICC to discuss the area code controversy.”
Representative Wait’s 69 th legislative district encompasses parts of Rockford and Winnebago County , Boone County , and several townships in DeKalb County . He may be reached at his district office in Belvidere at 411 South State Street or by calling (815) 547-7771.
